چکیده

Coastal evolution due to natural and human-induced causes or factors can be rather variable on quite different temporal and/or spatial scales. Our capability to understand and especially predict this variability on the longer time scales is still limited. This can lead to misinterpretation of coastal change information, which hampers informed decision-making and the subsequent functional design process related to (soft) engineering interventions. Research progress aimed at understanding observations of long-term coastal evolution is important to support and improve the decision-making and functional design process. In this contribution an attempt is made to review recent research methodological advances and to illustrate the concept with one exemplary result.

Assessment of the environmental quality of French continental Mediterranean lagoons with oyster embryo bioassay.

In order to better understand environmental disturbances in the French coastal Mediterranean lagoons, we used an ecotoxicological approach based on the measurement of the toxicity of the sediments using oyster embryo bioassay that provides a basis for assessing the effects on the fauna of contaminants adsorbed on the sedimentary particles. The study covers all of the main lagoons of the French ...

Heavy metals in coastal sediments of South Caspian Sea: natural or anthropogenic source?

This paper focuses on heavy metal distribution patterns in sediments of central Guilan (CG) and east Mazandaran (EM) in the south Caspian Sea coasts, north of Iran. Sediment sub-samples were retrieved from core and surficial samples in different environments of marine and coastal lagoons as well as coastal outcrops. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and Atomic Emission Spectrometry (...

Eolian Sand Transport Monitored by Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Morphodynamic changes at sandy coasts, as are dominant in The Netherlands, are typically monitored at yearly intervals by means of LIDAR. Meanwhile it is recognized that beach morphodynamics is not a regular process but is strongly correlated to meteorological conditions. A time series of 14 terrestrial laser scans of a beach experiment is analyzed, obtained during a time period of 88 hours cha...

On evaluating models in Computational Morphodynamics.

Recent advances in experimental plant biology have led to an increased potential to investigate plant development at a systems level. The emerging research field of Computational Morphodynamics has the aim to lead this development by combining dynamic spatial experimental data with computational models of molecular networks, growth, and mechanics in a multicellular context. The increased number...
